Working as a Master Barista

Meet Josefine

Master Barista in Kolding, Denmark

Master Barista

What are your main tasks as a Master Barista?

- As a Master Barista, my main tasks consist of quality assurance in the coffee shop. I make sure that we meet our standards and help train our colleagues in training tasks, among other things. I do this not only in my own coffee shop, but also in my assigned bonus shop. After all, not all coffee shops have a Master Barista.

What made you choose Espresso House as a place to work - and what makes you stay?

- I worked as a waiter for a year after 9th grade and was bitten by the service bug. I then chose Espresso House because I saw EH as being nice. There is a lot of diversity among our guests, and I think it's exciting and cool to experience and help make their visit with us a good one.
In addition, the young environment also appealed to me, I wanted to work with some peers. It's also the colleagues now that make me stay. It's fun to go to work and we have a good community in the coffee shop.

What have you learned from working at Espresso House?

- I've grown a lot personally. I went from being a young quiet 16-year-old girl to now being more outgoing. As a Master Barista, I have to dare to lead people and be the one who takes the lead.

When was the last time you laughed at work? And what was it about?

- I laughed a lot today with my colleagues. We get so close behind the bar that I would actually describe them as friends rather than colleagues.
I call it "everyday girlfriend laughing stuff".

What's the best thing about working at Espresso House?

- Well I started as a Host 4 years ago and since then I have been able to progress and take on different roles and today I am a Master Barista. There is always the opportunity to develop, which also definitely helps to make it even more enjoyable. I've been here for 4 years, but it's not at all the same thing I've been doing for all those 4 years.

If you had to describe Espresso House in one word, what would it be?

- Family.
Although we are all in different parts of the country, we all have in common that we work in Espresso House and have roughly the same daily routine. Many of the colleagues I have met now may not have been people I would normally hang out with, but EH has made it possible to form relationships across the board.
